There has been a harmonious development of the arts and crafts on the island, with special emphasis on ceramics of aboriginal roots, basket weaving and lacework as a form of artistic expression.

Canary ceramics are usually based on the traditional containers and earthen bowls of the pre-Hispanic world, that is to say that the guanches used them. Among the colourful pieces a new kind of clay emerged, establishing itself as the main characteristic that differentiates the islands.

In this manner, most of the outstanding range of pottery products can be found in municipalities such as Arguayo in Tenerife, Chipude in La Gomera, Tejeda in Gran Canaria, and Mazo in La Palma .

It would be unpardonable not to mention the wide range of objects manufactured in wood. The so-called Canary knife, one of the most outstanding, is much sought after, together with other exquisite works of leather and fabric as well as the renowned cigars of La Palma, carefully hand crafted, according to Cuban tradition.
